5 steps. 5 minutes total.
- 1
Prepare your station
- a.Measure the Rice Chex cereal into a very large mixing bowl (at least 6 quarts). Line a large baking sheet with parchment or wax paper and set it aside.
- 2
Melt the chocolate mixture
- a.In a large, microwave-safe bowl, combine the chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter. Microwave on high in 30-second intervals, stirring well after each interval, until the mixture is completely melted and smooth. This should take about 90-120 seconds total. Be careful not to overheat. Once smooth, stir in the vanilla extract.
- 3
Coat the cereal
- a.Let the chocolate mixture cool for one minute, then pour it over the cereal in the large bowl. Using a large spatula, gently fold the mixture into the cereal until every piece is evenly coated. Work quickly but carefully to avoid crushing the cereal.
- 4
Shake with powdered sugar
- a.Pour the powdered sugar into a 2-gallon zip-top bag. Add the chocolate-coated cereal to the bag. Seal it tightly, leaving some air inside, and shake vigorously for 1-2 minutes until all the pieces are thoroughly and evenly coated in sugar. For a less messy option, you can also do this in a large container with a secure lid.
- 5
Cool and set
- a.Spread the Puppy Chow in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet. Separate any large clumps with your fingers. Let it cool completely at room temperature for at least 15-20 minutes, allowing the chocolate to set and the coating to dry.
What to keep in mind.
5 tips from the recipe — small details that make a real difference to the final dish.
- 1Work quickly when coating the cereal with the chocolate mixture to prevent it from seizing or making the cereal soggy.
- 2For an extra-thick coating, you can chill the chocolate-coated cereal for 10 minutes before shaking it with the powdered sugar.
- 3Don't use natural peanut butter, as the oil separation can make the final product greasy. A standard creamy peanut butter works best.
- 4Shaking the cereal in two smaller batches can make it easier to get an even coating of powdered sugar on every piece.
- 5Store the finished Puppy Chow in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week, or in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
